Formula E has revealed its most ambitious development yet: the Gen4 race car. It has incredible speed, reaching an astonishing 0-100 km/h in 1.8 seconds. It leaves the assembly line faster than it enters formula 1 Car. Gen 4 will debut in the 2026-27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and is the next evolution of electric vehicles Motorsport.
During the first season in 2014 Formula E It was a curiosity for motorsport enthusiasts. The first cars were efficient, but not that fast. And the sound—or lack thereof—didn’t impress many fans. But over the past decade, the series has grown from a modest novelty to a high-stakes, producer-backed competition.
Today is a test case. electric car technology and with Gen4, Formula E could be ready to step out of the shadow of F1.
Gen4 in attack mode
The Gen4 is the fastest and most advanced car ever used in the Formula E Championship. With an available power of 600 kW (corresponding to more than 815 hp), the car has active four-wheel drive throughout the race. It also introduces advanced aerodynamics with two settings: a high downforce mode for qualifying and a low drag mode for race conditions, called Attack mode.
In attack mode, the Gen4 car offers all its power for spectacular overtaking, and the regenerative braking system now reaches a maximum output of 700 kW. The electric car will recover energy so efficiently that 40% of the vehicle’s operating power can come from braking alone. Energy capacity has also been increased to 55 kWh, opening the door to more aggressive racing strategies.
“Much more than a racing car”
Performance is only part of the equation. Gen4 is made from 100% recyclable materials and contains at least 20% recycled content throughout the design.
That’s why Jeff DoddsAs CEO of Formula E, the Gen4 is “much more than a racing car. It represents more than a decade of progress, innovation and ambition in electric racing.”
Dodds described it as the most advanced and durable Formula E car ever built.
Marek NawareckiThe senior director of circuit sports at the FIA, motorsport’s governing body, echoed this sentiment, stressing that the car “raises the bar” and gives manufacturers more room than ever to showcase road-relevant technology.
Gen4 is currently being tested, including championship teams. Porsche, nissanStellantis, Jaguar and Lola cars. Each manufacturer will optimize the platform with their own power management strategies. The appearance of the Gen4 car will also change slightly, with each team revealing its own unique livery.
The opportunity for teams to further develop their cars is an exciting time. Jaguar TCS Racing team principal Ian James said his group wants to put its stamp on the Gen4 and compete “as the sport takes another important step towards zero-emission all-electric technology.”
Compelling F1 purists
This latest technological breakthrough could be the moment Formula E catches the attention of a wider audience, especially those who once ignored it.
“Harshly criticized by some drivers, I think the Gen4 could be the car that brings Formula E closer to the mainstream, given the huge leap in speed,” he said. Jac Oliver SmithDeputy Editor-in-Chief of Motorsportweek. “The fast lap times expected from these cars and the technology built into them will certainly appeal to those interested in the sustainability aspect, as well as general racing purists who may have avoided Formula E in the past.”
For a sport long considered the future of auto racing, the Gen4 could be the car that finally brings it into the present.
