The new Disney+ and Hulu documentary about Caroline Flack made me ask terrible questions: I discovered that I knew nothing

Warning: This documentary is about suicide and domestic violence.

In 2020, British TV presenter Caroline Flack committed suicide two months after being accused of attacking her boyfriend. If you were in the UK at the time, it seemed like there was an article about it every day, but they weren’t necessarily telling the truth.

It honestly amazes me how little I knew about something that happened every day. But more importantly, Caroline started planning this documentary just days before her death, something Christine wanted to achieve.

For those who don’t know Caroline, we can say that she was television’s golden girl. Host: love island UNITED KINGDOM, the x-factor and an impressive candidate Don’t forget to come and dance. His famous roles only scratch the surface of his decades of work.

All this was lost after an argument with her boyfriend led to the police asking the CPS to overturn the first warning order. Caroline was instead charged with assault, despite her boyfriend Lewis Burton repeatedly calling for all charges to be dropped.

After being heard by the judge, the case never went to trial: Caroline committed suicide before it even began. IN Caroline Flack: In Search of the Truth, Christine explains to us the many reasons that led to this moment and I guarantee that your perception of what we were told will be completely changed.

Disney was kind enough to invite me to preview the documentary, but attending a screening dedicated to the media (an industry Caroline had treated so badly just to make money) was incredibly awkward. Within hours of watching the new two-part film, I asked myself some tough questions and surprised myself.

I checked my X/Twitter history. Had he mindlessly contributed to the chain fight with Caroline, without thinking about it? Was I referring to Lampgate (the media falsely reported that Caroline hit Lewis with a lamp)?

This had never happened to me before and I knew it deep down. But the fact that I thought of it myself shows the combined power of social and traditional media.

Carolina’s mother, Christine.

This sudden level of doubt I felt was perfectly summed up by Lizzie, Caroline’s older sister. With no access to Caroline during the media storm that followed the judge’s hearing, Lizzie began to believe the media story about her sister, turning her into someone she no longer recognized.

If a changed CPS judgment, due to a change in police reporting that led to factually incorrect media reports, could have changed Caroline’s sister’s mind, would anyone else have had a chance?

I’m not the only one who wants it Caroline Flack: In Search of the Truth to make viewers question their relationship with social media and parasocial opinion sharing, but I want the new documentary to make Caroline’s truth widely known.

Five years have passed, but inaccuracies in his case continue to circulate, which we believe to be true. If both parties don’t make clear our duty of care to Caroline, Christine and anyone else facing such intense public scrutiny in the future, I don’t know what will.

Caroline Flack: In Search of the Truth now streaming on Disney+ (UK, Australia) and Hulu (US).
