A designer from Singapore has turned a functional SNES into a wearable Nike sneaker

Have you ever gone for a walk to pick bananas? Donkey Kong Land on the SNES and I thought, “Man, I wish I could play this game in my shoes.” »Very well, designers Gustavo Bonzanini Get started to make this dream a reality. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Super nintendo’s launch in Japan, Bonzanini created the AIR SNES, a pair of custom Nike Air Max 90 retro sneakers that double as a fully functional SNES console.

“The idea came about after researching collaborations between sneaker brands and video games. I’ve always wondered: wouldn’t it be fun if these shoes, which look like a video game, actually functioned as a console?” Bonzanini said this in a statement shared with Engadget.

The shoe was created using a Raspberry Pi Zero W with the RetroPie emulator, which Bonzanini adapted to the shoe’s tongue. The shoe has a battery capacity of up to 30 minutes of playback time and has a built-in HDMI port.

For those nostalgic for old-school display connectors, the shoe also comes with a small analog converter for RCA connectors. In terms of controls, the shoe is compatible with an original SNES gamepad, but you can also use an 8BitDo Mod Kit, which connects wirelessly to the Raspberry Pi via bluetooth.

“This art project was my way of celebrating both and promoting the idea of what sneaker culture and technology can be when they merge,” said Bonzanini. Unfortunately for all of us who would snap up a pair in a heartbeat, the AIR SNES is just a one-off creation to celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of the greatest consoles of all time.
