- The AH270 ECO key fob exposes your data to drops, obstacles and theft every day.
- Apacer AH270 ECO USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds are only adequate for single transfers
- It uses recycled plastic, but is still very sensitive to physical hazards.
Apacer, known for its industrial storage devices, has launched the AH270 ECO USB flash drive that doubles as a key ring accessory.
The device is extremely compact, measuring just 58.1 x 17.1 x 12.2mm and weighing less than 6g, and is equipped with a ring that allows it to be securely attached to your keys, backpack or bag.
Its size makes it virtually invisible in daily use, while providing instant access to stored data, a convenience that traditional portable SSDs or larger hard drives typically don’t offer.
Performance and storage capacity
The AH270 ECO uses USB 3.2 Gen 1 and offers read and write speeds of approximately 500 MB/s and storage options of 64 GB and 128 GB.
These numbers are fine for occasional file transfers and light mobile workloads, but they can’t compete with the performance or storage flexibility of larger portable SSDs.
In comparison, traditional 2.5-inch hard drives offer lower transfer speeds, typically between 100 and 150 MB/s, but their larger size obviously requires more careful handling.
The AH270 ECO’s body is made from recycled plastic, including discarded beverage bottles, making it an environmentally friendly device.
This extreme miniaturization maximizes portability, but it also exposes the device to hazards that are largely eliminated when devices are stored safely in pockets or cases.
Attaching your device to a key chain, especially if it’s something resembling a thin cord, leaves it vulnerable to drops and other everyday hazards.
Accidental drops, entanglement with other objects, overloading of the mounting circuit or theft are much more likely than transporting devices safely.
Even with protective design features, the SSD can lose connectivity, become damaged, or stop transferring data, especially during rapid file processing or frequent data movement.
The propulsion is focused on visibility and comfort, but this comes at the expense of safety and durability.
The AH270 ECO has a well-thought-out design, offers enough speed for occasional tasks and is solidly built for its size.
However, the decision to convert a storage device into a key ring accessory comes with a practical drawback that neither the compact design nor the high quality of the materials can overcome.
The concept itself exposes an active SSD to constant risk and makes it a risky proposition for everyday use.
