ChatGPT’s voice mode has long been a powerful way to enrich chatbot conversations with artificial intelligence (AI), but it has some weaknesses that hold it back.
But OpenAI has now updated chatgpt to address some of the biggest complaints about voice mode, which should make it even more useful than before. Here’s everything you need to know:

In previous versions, ChatGPT allowed you to start a text conversation, but as soon as you switched to voice, the screen switched to a separate voice mode. Now enable voice chat during a text chat and ChatGPT won’t miss anything and will continue the exact same conversation without restarting or starting over.
2. You can always restore the previous interface.
Don’t like ChatGPT’s new approach? That’s okay, because you can always go back to how they were before.
Despite the new interface, you can reset it by tapping on your account at the bottom left of the app to open Settings, scroll down to the Voice Mode section, and enable Separate Mode.
If the previous layout looked familiar and was easier to navigate, you may want to do this.
3. You will see maps and more.
The new update offers even more benefits. Visually, you get a real-time transcript of your chat and can see past messages when they’re over. Additionally, ChatGPT can display local weather forecasts or a requested map in the chat window.
This turns your voice chats into a sort of hybrid mode that combines voice, text and information widgets to give you the information you need at a glance.
4. A different jack model is always used
There’s one more thing to consider with the updated voice mode: the model that powers it.
While text chats with the OpenAI bot can be used with the latest gpt 5.1 model, OpenAI he said That on paid subscriptions, voice sessions automatically “start” with GPT-4o and then switch to GPT-4o mini when the GPT-4o minutes expire.
The GPT-4o is the company’s “most advanced voice model”, but it is an older and less powerful model than the gpt-5.1; Although voice is now integrated into chat, you won’t get the same experience or response in voice mode.
5. Paid subscribers get different language models.
Using voice mode also depends on whether you have a paid ChatGPT subscription or not. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s daily voice usage for subscribers is virtually unlimited and, as mentioned above, it supports GPT-4o. Free users, on the other hand, have access to the GPT 4o Mini model from the start and have limited daily usage.
