When you ask ChatGPT for gift ideas, the AI chatbot no longer just suggests products, but can now help you buy them on the spot. OpenAI has announced that US users will be able to “buy products directly in the program” using a new feature called. Immediate payment.
The rollout will begin with Etsy sellers and will soon expand to more than 1 million Shopify sellers.
The experience is designed to be seamless and everything happens within the ChatGPT window. If you ask ChatGPT for “gifts under $50 for a coffee lover,” it can suggest products and let you buy them without leaving the app. After shipping and payment information is confirmed, users can complete a purchase with just one click.
At launch, the feature will only work for single items, but support for multi-item shopping carts and international marketplaces is planned.
The basis of this system is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard developed with Stripe. OpenAI publicly publishes the protocol for merchants and developers to use across platforms. The goal is to securely connect AI agents, merchants, and payment providers, leaving processing, returns, and customer service in the hands of the merchant.

“ChatGPT simply acts as an AI agent for the user, transferring information securely between the user and the merchant, just as a digital personal shopper would.” the press release from OpenAI said.
Sellers pay a small commission on sales made.
According to OpenAI, product recommendations on ChatGPT are not sponsored and are always based on relevance and not advertising. With more than 700 million people using ChatGPT every week, the new feature can give marketers direct access to a large, new customer base.
Stripe is involved in payment processing for Instant Checkout and helped create the merchant protocol.
“Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for artificial intelligence,” said Will Gaybrick, president of products and operations at Stripe. “This means we need to rethink current business systems and create new AI-powered experiences for billions of people.”
