Just in time for Black Friday, I tested ChatGPT’s new shopping tool, but can it beat the expert?

It’s the end of November and that means it’s time to scour the internet for the best Black Friday deals.

Fortunately, if you’re reading this, you already know that TechRadar is one of the best places on the web to find discounts; There are journalists from all over the world investigating the best ways to save money.

Hi ChatGPT, find me the best AirPods deals

Yesterday I wrote about the best airpods Black Friday deals available right now, so I thought about the airpods pro 2 discounts this morning when I was trying to search for the ChatGPT store.

I decided to enable the shopping search feature (just click the “+” button in ChatGPT to select it) and asked a rather vague but easy to answer shopping question: “Black Friday AirPods deals.”

ChatGPT started brainstorming and then asked me some questions based on my needs, e.g. B. what was my price range and which models interested me. The AI then showed me different products in a tab-like interface where I could see if I was interested and, if not, why not.

Within two minutes, ChatGPT’s store search gave me a complete AirPods buying guide, with the two best discount offers in the UK at the time of writing. It was really impressive, I can’t lie.

Again, it was a simple test: would it be a more complicated challenge?

How about something more vague?

When looking for a Black Friday deal, you’re often looking for advice on the best product and the best discount. To test this, I asked ChatGPT Shopping Research: “Find a great Black Friday deal on a deep fryer.” »

Could ChatGPT compete with the great information I found in NewForTech’s article on the best Black Friday air fryer deals? I referred ChatGPT to a dual chamber air fryer, preferably from Ninja, as I saw that there were already many offers for sale.

This time, ChatGPT’s store search took seven minutes to recommend a product to me, and although I found one of the best deals in the UK at the time, it only gave me two options. On NewForTech’s human site, we now have seven for the UK and the same number for the US.

ChatGPT’s shopping survey experience was quite pleasant; In fact, I really enjoyed letting the AI handle itself during my work day. However, I still can’t recommend this new AI tool, for the same reason that I don’t think anyone can solve the problems with the other search offers on the market, namely reliability.

99% is not enough

If you’re looking for a TechRadar deal this Black Friday, rest assured that the price has been verified and the author has done a thorough review to ensure you won’t find a better price.

With ChatGPT’s research tool, you can never be 100% sure, whether through this specific purchasing tool or through in-depth research, that the thought process is not in any way a hallucination. And because you can make things up, misinterpret situations, and maybe even lose distributors, you never know if the deal you’re being told is really the best deal.

ChatGPT’s store search feature is very well done if you need extra help making a purchase decision, but it doesn’t replace the hours people spend updating deal posts in real time to ensure they can save as much money as possible or, even if there’s no discount, to alert you to a purchase you won’t regret.

After trying out ChatGPT’s store search, I discovered a new appreciation for the work my colleagues and I do during seasonal sales like Black Friday, whether it’s researching products to make sure they offer the best value or looking for price trends online. Journalists all over the world, and not just on this site, work hard during the holidays so you don’t have to.

I will still use the store locator for quick product information and comparisons, but that still requires human research, either independently or via a website staffed by professionals.

At the end of the day, AI is just a tool that can save you some money this time of year, and there’s no harm in using it with other platforms. Don’t take ChatGPT’s shopping survey as gospel, or you could be losing money instead of saving it.
