Microsoft has just warned users of Windows 11 that their installation is about to become unsupported if they are not on version 23H2. This means crucial security updates will no longer be applied. In a reminder issued 90 days in advance, Microsoft told users of Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro that users would soon not be safe on Windows 11 22H2 anymore.

To be more precise, the final date is October 8, 2024. Business and education users still on 21H2 will also lose support since that consumer deadline has passed. In other words, update to Windows 23H2 until October 2024. Microsoft also notes that the final security update for these editions will be available on October 8, 2024. After this date, devices won’t get monthly security and preview updates.

Upgrade Now, or Soon – Or Be Forced to Do So

Users on Windows 11 22H2 need to update to the current version of the OS, 23H2, immediately. That, however, will not be the current version in October 2024. The 24H2 update is expected to be out in September, so there’s a good chance it could be available in October, though not for sure.

Some might want to wait until 24H2. In either case, come October, something will have to be done because being on 22H2 (or 21H2) just keeps your PC out of protection. Vulnerabilities would remain unpatched and the security updates work to ensure you are protected against possible exploits. Post-deadline, Microsoft usually forces updates to ensure safety. This time, they only mention it for “Windows 11 business devices not managed by IT departments.” They do not mention consumer devices, which is unusual. It might be an oversight unless Microsoft has changed its policy, which seems unlikely.
