Verizon alerted Maine’s Attorney General’s Office of an employee data incident. However, it doesn’t appear to be a full-scale breach.
Reportedly, the company informed the US Government that an employee accessed sensitive data on September 21, 2023.
The breach involved 63,206 employees’ details, including names, addresses, SSNs, and more. Customer data wasn’t affected.
Verizon discovered the incident nearly three months later, on December 12, 2023. Although unauthorized access is concerning, Verizon reassured that it wasn’t a full-scale breach, citing no malicious intent.
“We’ve found no evidence of misuse or external sharing,” stated the breach notification. Verizon is bolstering technical controls to prevent future occurrences and informing relevant regulators.
To safeguard affected individuals, Verizon offers a two-year identity theft protection and credit monitoring service. Rich Young, a Verizon spokesperson, noted that they didn’t involve the police due to a lack of malicious intent.
Verizon, a telecommunications giant, serves over 150 million Americans. In 2022, it boasted over 110,000 employees and $136.8 billion in revenue.
