Apple is reportedly working on new satellite features for the iPhone

Slowly but surely, Apple has integrated satellite capabilities into its iPhones. Get ready for a whole new range of possibilities.

According to Bloomberg reportsApple is working on expanding the capacity for iPhoneas well as some Apple Watches when working via satellite connections. These include map features that work outside the network, ways for third-party apps to access satellite connectivity, other messaging features such as streaming images along with text, and possible ways to use satellite connections without a direct line of sight to the sky.

In recent years, Apple has introduced features that use satellite technology, including SOS emergency, Roadside assistanceAND Write a text message offline.

An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s satellite ambitions could ultimately compete more directly with the services of major wireless carriers like AT&T and Verizon. This could give Apple more control over security and design and make it less dependent on these telecom partners.

How will Apple handle this situation?

To make these ambitious plans possible, Apple will need to expand its infrastructure or at least partner with companies making similar expansions.

The company already has plans for one $1.5 billion investment in Globalstar to help fund a new satellite constellation and could use SpaceX’s Starlink to improve its satellite services.

In the near term, Apple will likely introduce new user-friendly features as it expands its satellite capabilities.

“The next generation could allow hikers, travelers and remote workers to download map data, share images and even get real-time weather updates without cell reception,” said Mahdi Eslamimehr, vice president of Quandary Peak Research.

Currently, Apple does not charge for already released satellite features, but this may change as new features are rolled out.

“Basic satellite functions are expected to remain free, while advanced functions such as high-bandwidth image sharing or third-party integration may be available through paid subscriptions or bundled mobile plans,” Eslamimehr said.

If Apple could offer more wireless access via satellite, combined with cell towers as a backup, that could be useful in the event of a natural disaster or network outage, he said.

What should the carriers do?

Wireless carriers aren’t just expected to wait for Apple to keep up with the services they offer. are they work independently satellite services, by creating our own services or partnering with satellite companies.

Apple may become one of many players offering hybrid connectivity in the future.

“For users outside the Apple ecosystem, this competition is expected to accelerate industry adoption of hybrid mobile satellite services, improve reliability, expand nationwide coverage and potentially lower prices,” Eslamimehr said.
