OpenAI released its new version GPT 5.2 (a few days after the expected release) and ChatGPT 5.2 was released at the same time. The new model arrives relatively soon after ChatGPT-5.1, but while the last update focused on restoring the charm and personality I thought ChatGPT-5 lacked, the latest update focuses on more ascetic goals.
OpenAI presents GPT-5.2 as a model that can be better explained, work more reliably, and handle long, complex, and even complicated tasks. But OpenAI knows that the average person isn’t interested in benchmark charts or academic articles extolling the new model’s capabilities. That’s why the company encourages people to see major technological improvements as an introduction to everyday utility. Just like its predecessor, ChatGPT-5.2 is available in three versions that increase in size and potential capabilities: Instant, Thinking and Pro.
As generative AI has grown from an experimental novelty to an everyday habit, people are relying on ChatGPT for a variety of academic and professional needs, including many that no one at OpenAI had thought of. ChatGPT-5.2 is designed to support this load. Here’s what you need to know about the latest experiment.
GPT 5.2 is here! Available today on ChatGPT and API. It is the most intelligent model available in the world and is particularly suitable for performing tasks based on practical knowledge.December 11, 2025
1. Think clearly
OpenAI conducted tests showing that GPT-5.2 performs at or above human expert levels on a wide range of tasks involving large amounts of information, a first for OpenAI models. In the GDPval assessment, which evaluates 44 different categories of professional work, from finance to law to consulting, GPT-5.2 Thinking outperforms or matches top professionals in nearly three-quarters of tasks, such as creating spreadsheets, presentations and more complex analyses.
The main change lies in the model’s ability to coordinate thinking on several levels. GPT-5.2 Thinking can break down a complex question into parts, plan a path through the problem, and provide an answer that reflects a coherent line of thought. It’s not just about predicting the next plausible sentence, but the next plausible project for days.
You might find that it makes a difference if ChatGPT explains a concept more clearly than you think, or if it stays on track during a long conversation, or if it simply provides step-by-step logic that actually stays consistent.
Larger memory
The clearest thought concerns the memory upgrade that GPT-5.2 offers. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.2 Thinking achieves near-perfect precision when tracking information over hundreds of thousands of words. You can put a full project brief, a long report, a legal contract, an academic article, or long transcripts into ChatGPT, and instead of losing track halfway through, the model now keeps track of the details and treats everything as if it were connected.
If you are a student, you can upload more measurements and request benchmarks, or build financial reports for a small business and request trends or strategic advice. The model can handle the kind of multi-file context that overwhelmed previous versions.
The memory improvement also extends to your vision. ChatGPT-5.2 is much better for understanding charts, graphs and software. Even details in blurry or complex images can be seen better. Longer memory isn’t usually the main feature people get excited about, but it can be a big factor in what people think of ChatGPT-5.2.
More reliable
The third major improvement of ChatGPT-5.2 is reliability. According to OpenAI, hallucinations are much less common in GPT-5.2 than in GPT-5.1, decreasing by 30%. Errors still occur, but you don’t have to spend as much time checking and correcting them.
Greater reliability is also evident in tool handling. OpenAI provided an example of a chaotic customer service scenario involving a delayed flight, missed connecting flight, an unexpected overnight stay, and seat requests for medical reasons. GPT-5.2 managed to rebook the traveler to the correct seat and provided compensation, while GPT-5.1 crashed halfway through.
A ChatGPT model that is less likely to slip during a conversation is the one that people like and trust the most, but OpenAI also focused on the reliability of GPT-5.2 as a secure conversation partner. ChatGPT-5.2 is more responsive with better and more useful suggestions when dealing with topics like mental health and emotional disorders.
ChatGPT-5.2 is gradually rolling out to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Go, Business and Enterprise plans. Access to GPT-5.1 will end in three months for anyone who regularly uses AI tools. The latter model may appear far behind as an AI-powered interlocutor better able to imitate thinking. ChatGPT-5.2 isn’t flashy, but people who want an AI that thinks as carefully as it talks will probably be happy.
