- Google Photos has unveiled a series of updates to its video editing software, inspired by companies like CapCut
- You can now choose from several video templates to easily create a short video, and there is also the option to add music and text.
- Google also announced that its revamped video editor has become the default editing software for Android.
Google Photos is undergoing another round of changes, and the photo service has started rolling out major updates to its video editing tool, with similar features to CapCut, one of our top video editing apps.
Short video editing apps are more popular than ever in the age of ubiquitous TikTok and Instagram Reels, and now Google Photos has decided to tap into this market. The company announced in a blog post that “creating and editing your videos is easier than ever thanks to the new features you requested” and indicates that updates are now available for some users.
With the exception of one new feature, all new Google Photos updates are available on Android and iOS devices. So what happens?
Templates, a new timeline and more
First, Google Photos finally offers templates that let you create a multi-clip video much faster, perfect for video editing beginners. Each template contains its own music, lyrics and songs, synchronized to the beat of the soundtrack.
All you have to do is select the images from your Google Photos Gallery that you want to use in the template of your choice, and a TikTok-worthy highlight reel will be created in seconds. Currently, this tool is only available for Android, but iOS users will not miss any other new and interesting updates.
According to the company, Google Photos’ video editor is also getting a major overhaul, making it easier for everyone to use. The biggest improvement, however, is the new “universal system”. Similar to features like CapCut, this new editing view lets you see all the clips and photos you’ve added to a video in one place, where you can easily crop and drag individual clips to rearrange them, nice and easy.
Find the perfect soundtrack and add quirky lyrics
You can make the best short video ever, but it won’t come to life until you overlay it with a catchy song, and that’s another useful update to Google Photos. Audio tracks are now available in the redesigned video editor, and you can now search your Google Photos music library for a song that perfectly matches the content of your trailer.
In addition to the ability to add music, there is a new custom text option that you can overlay over your highlights. You can choose from a large selection of fonts, colors and text backgrounds to add a special touch to your final video montage.
To top it all off, Google has announced that its redesigned video editor has now become the default editing software on Android if you want to edit individual videos. All you need to do is open a video from your gallery and click the “Edit” button to get started. You also have the option to add text and music to individual videos, as well as highlights.
As mentioned, all of these features are currently available on Android and most on iOS. If you don’t have access to them yet, don’t worry: Google says new video editing tools will be available soon so you can make the most of your creative skills.
