As part of its efforts to expand its physical infrastructure in anticipation of growing customer demand for VPN access, Surfshark has just launched its first 100 Gbps servers in Amsterdam. The new server offers ten times the capacity of industry standard 10 Gbps VPN hardware.
IN a blog post Commenting on the news, Surfshark explained that this update is part of “preparing for the future and making sure high internet activity from others doesn’t slow down your internet connection.”
The jump is impressive. While this won’t change current internet speeds, it will help set a new standard for VPN servers that will drive technological progress in the long term.
In theory, deploying 100Gbps servers means that when using Surfshark, you will experience smoother service with fewer interruptions, even when many people are connected to the server.
However, the only 100 Gbps server location is in the Netherlands and you cannot achieve these speeds anywhere else in the world. Also, server capacity and distance aren’t the only variables in the speed equation. Traffic encryption processes also introduce some latency.
According to Surfshark, the company is testing this innovation with select servers, laying the groundwork for possible future implementations. A Surfshark representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Why is this important to you?
A single 100 Gbps server in the Netherlands is unlikely to affect your internet speed if you use a VPN. While more and more people are choosing to use VPNs, this is an improvement that will only affect a limited number of users at a time.
However, Surfshark’s 100Gbps server is the first step towards a new industry standard. If this standard were to be widely adopted, it would benefit all VPN users.
