6 reasons you’d want a foldable like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 or Motorola Razr instead of an iPhone

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, el iPhone 14 Pro y el Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

Now that Samsung has launched its new foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, a thought has occurred to me. Apple will soon present the iPhone 15 range, and then the new Google Pixel 8 will arrive, and more. If you’re one of those who use an iPhone all the time, you probably haven’t thought about upgrading to a foldable… but you should. The best foldable phones, especially the compact ones, have features that would satisfy even the die-hard Apple fan.

Within this type of clamshell folding, two models stand out. On one side we have the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the more basic Razr 40, and on the other, of course, Samsung sells some of the most complete and stylish foldable phones, be it the 2022’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 or the recently introduced Galaxy Z Flip. 5. If you’ve never folded a phone in half or if creases scare you, don’t worry! Here we have collected several reasons why you should consider buying a leaflet.

1. You don’t need to hide your phone in a case

I’ve used flip phones and iPhones, and while I was head over heels for the best iPhone case as soon as I got my hands on the iPhone 14 Pro, I haven’t even bothered with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 or the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra – with these, when I wasn’t using my phone, I just closed it and the screen was protected.

As surprising as it may surprise you, folding screens are quite strong. They are not very resistant to scratches and can be marked with a sharp fingernail, but they are very resistant to impacts. And that’s if the internal screen is open, which usually doesn’t happen when I put the phone away.

When the phone is closed, it’s protected on the back. On the Motorola Razr 40 (and Moto Razr 40 Ultra magenta), the finish is “vegan leather”, very pleasant to the touch, and more resistant than glass. But that’s not all, oh, on the Razr 40 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Flip 5 glass, we have a stronger Gorilla Glass Victus panel, so they should be able to absorb a few drops without breaking.

2. Surely no one has the same cell phone as you

Right now there are two types of iPhones: those with Dynamic Island and those without (or seen otherwise, with or without a notch). This is how you know what next-generation iPhones have. There’s nothing else to show unless you’re a big fan of Apple’s exclusive boring purple Pro. Drop any other phone and you’ll struggle to explain what makes it special. After all, they’re all pretty much the same.

But when you field a Galaxy Z Flip 4 or a Moto Razr in the company of an iPhone, things change a lot. Heads are spinning. People want to see you do it again. You can pass it on for them to try for themselves. They will complain about the crease of the screen but the truth is you will know that in the long run, you won’t even notice it, and really what people have is just jealousy.

How long hasn’t a phone been exciting in a crowd? It’s fun to show off a foldable cell phone because its format is so much more than a gimmick. It’s a real feature that makes the phone more fun to use.

3. Using a cover screen is super futuristic

Using the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra closed and relying only on the cover screen makes the phone feel like a device from a whole new category. It’s compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet powerful enough to explore trail maps or snap selfies with your phone’s main camera. It’s more convenient and less annoying than a huge smartphone. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to use a huge mobile when you open it.

The new Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers a similar experience. The new generation features a larger and more useful coverage screen. This is a game changer for foldable phones and the category has finally matured.

4. You can enjoy a big screen on a much smaller mobile

Pop quiz: Which do you think has a bigger screen: Apple’s big iPhone 14 Plus / iPhone 14 Pro Max or Samsung’s compact Galaxy Z Flip 4? Of course, the question is tricky: they are the same size, 6.7 inches. Samsung gets the same screen size in a phone that’s not only foldable but also thinner and lighter than the iPhone 14 Plus when unfolded.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is even bigger than those phones, packing a 6.9-inch screen into a body that’s slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 4 when folded in half, thanks to a new hinge design that’s now also embraced Samsung in the new Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The difference is that the iPhone 14 Plus looks like a big iPhone, but foldable phones are compact and easy to fit in your pocket. If you put a case in it, the iPhone is even bulkier, while the Moto Razr looks better naked.

5. Unique camera angles to make your selfies stand out

The most boring photos are the ones that everyone takes. Hold your phone at eye level and shoot what you see, and you’ll always get the same shot. If you want something different, you have to change your perspective. Position the camera in an unusual place, aiming it from a unique angle and you’ll have a photo worth sharing.

With a foldable clamshell, you don’t need a stand or tripod. Your phone is made to bend. You can position and aim the cameras in unique ways, and you’ll be able to see yourself on the cover screen so you know the photo comes out great.

Indeed, today’s foldable phone cameras fall short of the cameras on the best iPhones, but they far outpace the iPhone’s selfie cameras, and on foldable phones, you can use the main camera as a selfie camera. If you like capturing moments and sharing them, folding will give you a new way to remember them.

6. They will cost you less than the iPhone 14 Plus

Flip phones are expensive, but they used to cost a lot more than they do now. A new foldable clamshell cell phone costs around a thousand euros, but in addition, we usually see great deals.

Speaking of introductory prices in Spain, and filling in the templates we talked about in this article, we have:

As you can see, for example, a new Apple iPhone 14 Plus costs €1,159, while the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra costs almost the same, €1,199, and on top of that it has double the storage space, and if you find it with a discount will cost you less than the Apple cellphone. The base model of the Motorola Razr is even cheaper at €899, but it won’t have the screen cover, which is a great feature.

On the other hand, now that Samsung has launched its new Galaxy Z Flip 5, we can count on the price drop of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, so it can be very interesting to look for last year’s model for sale.

Compared to an iPhone, a flip phone offers an extra screen on the outside. You don’t get the camera quality, but the extra screen more than makes up for it.
