- The December 2025 Patch Tuesday updates broke MSMQ on Windows Server and Windows 10 enterprise systems, breaking IIS applications and websites.
- Microsoft is developing a fix, but says affected organizations should contact sales support for a fix or rollback.
- Reported issues include idle queues, write errors, and false “out of resources” errors despite sufficient capacity.
Microsoft asks that businesses experiencing issues with Message Queuing (MSMQ) contact us directly for assistance in finding a resolution.
The company recently released the December Patch Tuesday cumulative update, which appears to have broken MSMQ and caused issues in enterprise applications and Internet Information Services (IIS) websites.
MSMQ is a Windows service that allows applications to communicate by sending messages through queues. It enables asynchronous, reliable messaging between systems even when offline, decoupling applications and improving resiliency in distributed or enterprise environments.
No deadline for correction
The patch issues appear to affect users of Windows 10 22H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016 with updates KB5071546, KB5071544, and KB5071543 installed.
Private users don’t seem to be affected by this, only professional users.
“It is very unlikely that people using Windows Home or Pro editions on personal devices will experience this issue. This issue primarily affects enterprise or managed IT environments, ” Microsoft said.
“A fix is available for affected devices. Contact Microsoft Support for Business to apply the fix and resolve this issue in your organization. “
Microsoft said it is currently working on a fix, but it has not yet been completed. The company has no deadline or timeline for the patch’s release, so we may have to wait for the January 2026 patch batch as well.
For now, IT administrators experiencing these issues should contact Microsoft Enterprise Support for assistance with a resolution or even to roll back installed updates.
In a call to businesses, Microsoft said it was aware of several issues after the patch, including MSMQ queues not working, applications unable to write queues, or websites returning “insufficient resources” errors.
