“While Black Friday sales highlight many new technologies, older products shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to the big sales of the year. It’s no secret that retailers slash prices during this event to move much of their remaining inventory, but many of these items are still great buys.
Take the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless headphones for example. They’ve been picking the best headphones you can buy for over two years, even after the launch of the new XM5. The older models still offer excellent sound quality and noise cancellation, and best of all, you can pick them up on Black Friday for almost $100/£100 less than the newer pair.
Other examples are in televisions, laptops and phones, where older, cheaper products perform just as well (and sometimes even better) at a much lower price. It’s a way to get many of the best, less obvious Black Friday deals, and it’s something we put a lot of emphasis on when looking for deals.
“My Black Friday advice is to do your research. This could mean making a list of products you want to buy on Black Friday, knowing when retailers start their Black Friday sales, or using price tracking tools to make sure you’re getting a good deal.”
The last tip is the most important. Some retailers will raise the price of an item before the sale starts, making you feel like you got a really good deal. A price tracker shows you a product’s price history so you know what kind of discount you’re getting. If it’s a record price or the lowest price of the year, you know it’s a bargain.
“My best advice to readers is to get in early, especially if you’re planning to buy in-demand products. Record prices on apple products, cheap Amazon devices and in some cases high-end TVs have sold out in recent years, so it’s worth taking advantage of the early sales that are becoming more common at major retailers.”
But as always, I recommend checking the retailer’s fine print to see if they offer price guarantees. This can protect you from further price cuts and give you peace of mind if you buy early. An example of this can be found in Best Price Best Buy Extended Holiday Price Guarantee“.
“My advice is a little more holistic than that of my colleagues. While I’m a fan of deals that I can grab on impulse, I also recommend going into the Black Friday sale with a plan of what you’re looking for so you know what the best price will be, but you also don’t want to wait too long and risk missing out on a discounted item because it’s running out of stock.”
Also think about what you need or how, for example, a new technology fits into your current design. As tempting as it is to buy something cheap, if you don’t use it or get the most out of it, you can fill your home with unnecessary things. Smartphones are a good example of this, as they have become so iterative in their annual updates that I don’t think there is an urgent need to have the latest model, as a model from two or more years ago is probably still fine; Of course, dealers and brands that offer good trade-in deals mitigate this problem somewhat.
In short: shop with a dose of common sense and a plan. And bookmark TechRadar for a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about Black Friday deals.
