The cliffhanger in the fourth episode of Maxton Hall Season 2 creates new problems for Ruby and James, but it’s not the plot that should worry us.

James (Damian Hardung) and Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten) have decided to give their relationship another chance and this time keep it a secret from prying eyes. But she soon becomes a school friend after Elaine (Eli Riccardi) decides to have a white picnic after school, creating tension between her and Ruby.

But the Prime Video show doesn’t stop there. After receiving a full scholarship to Oxford and a part-time job through an interview with Alice Campbell (Proschat Madani), James asks Ruby to stay with him while her father Mortimer (Fedja van Huêt) is in New York.

Little do they know, Mortimer isn’t flying anywhere because his flight was grounded due to bad weather. When the three return home, it’s a race against time to see if they can catch James and Ruby.

But why is this a problem? James is no longer allowed to see Ruby by his father, who instead wants him to marry into Elaine’s much wealthier family. Mortimer’s anger at James grows more physical with each episode, and a life-changing disaster always seems just a few scenes away.

However, I don’t think it’s James who feels Mortimer’s true wrath… but Lydia (Sonja Weißer), his secretly pregnant sister.

Surprise! We found out that Lydia was pregnant in episodes 1-3 and told Ruby before James accidentally found out. The only one who doesn’t know is Mortimer, and this is unlikely to be a happy event for him.

As disappointed as James is, Lydia seems to get even less sympathy from her father. He tries to balance school and social life by taking care of his brother after their mother’s death, but also tries to prove to Mortimer that he deserves to join the family business.

However, there is another important factor at play. The boy’s father is Graham Sutton (Eidin Jalali), a teacher at James and Lydia’s school. She had an affair with him in Season 1 and now that he has become an assistant director, Lydia insists on never telling him the truth.

Personally, I think we really overlooked how morally repugnant this relationship was, and the combination of the pregnancy and the relationship with her father will lead Lydia to a dark place. James gets a lot of attention, but to me she is by far the most vulnerable.

At this moment, he puts on a brave face. But when Mortimer discovers James and Ruby together Maxton Lounge Season 2, episode 5 (which, let’s face it, probably is) is another nail in Lydia’s metaphorical coffin.
