Apple Intelligence to Debut at WWDC 2024

Based on insights from Tim Cook’s remarks and numerous reports, Apple is developing AI features for its devices and platforms. The technology giant will likely introduce these features during the WWDC 2024 keynote.

However, the branding of these AI features will not use the term artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it will be named “Apple Intelligence.” This new feature set will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, focusing on enhancing daily-use applications and services.

Gurman notes that Apple is prioritizing features with broad appeal over flashy technology like image or video generation. Examples include email summarization, webpage gist extraction, note summarization, voice recording transcription, and notification digests. Suggested replies in Messages will improve, and Siri will gain advanced capabilities, potentially through a large-language model, enhancing its utility in managing app functions and multi-step queries.

Additionally, Apple will collaborate with OpenAI to power some features. The “Apple Intelligence” features will be optional and may be labeled as beta versions, suggesting ongoing improvements and additions.

To use “Apple Intelligence,” a Mac or iPad with an M-Series chip is necessary. For iPhones, the upcoming 2024 models and the iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max will be supported, with the A15 Bionic chip likely being the minimum requirement. The features might rely on device-based or cloud-based processing, with a strong emphasis on privacy and security. WWDC will highlight Apple’s precautions, including security features in its data centers, and assure users that customer data profiles will not be created.

Apple’s focus on privacy aims to set it apart from competitors and encourage users to opt into “Apple Intelligence.” The practical benefits of these upgrades could streamline workflows and simplify tasks.

WWDC 2024 will reveal more about Apple’s AI strategy, including expected announcements and the event schedule. Anticipated updates include a Calculator app for iPad, VisionOS 2.0 with new environments for Vision Pro, new wallpapers for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, a dedicated password management app, and an emoji creation feature.
