Fujifilm is expected to release the X-E5 in June, according to reliable industry source Fuji Rumors. This news comes four years after the launch of the X-E4 in 2021.
The X-E4 received mixed feedback. While some praised its compact, minimalist design, others felt it lacked key features that made earlier X-E models popular. Fans of the series are now hoping the X-E5 will strike a better balance.
Fujifilm’s X-E line has long been admired for its retro design and tactile controls. These features helped build a loyal following. But the X-E4’s stripped-down approach left some users disappointed.
Although Fujifilm hasn’t officially confirmed the X-E5, rumors of its arrival have been circulating since late last year. A summer launch wouldn’t be surprising.
The big question is what direction Fujifilm will take. Back in December, the X-E5 was named one of the most anticipated cameras of 2025. Since then, however, no major details or leaks have emerged—an unusual silence for a product likely deep in development.

What the X-E5 Needs to Get Right
On paper, the Fujifilm X-E4 had strong potential. It featured the same 26MP X-Trans sensor and X-Processor 4 found in higher-end X-mount models. It also kept the compact size and classic rangefinder design that fans loved.
But its minimalist design proved divisive. Fujifilm removed several key physical controls, including the rear dial, AF lever, and built-in flash. The grip was also gone. Combined with the lack of in-body image stabilization and weather-sealing, many felt the X-E4 favored style over function.
Critics also noted the absence of dual SD card slots, arguing it wasn’t built for serious photographers. At a launch price of $850 / £799 / AU$1,399 (body only), that was a tough sell.
When the X-T30 II arrived later in 2021, it offered better value. Fujifilm quietly discontinued the X-E4 after just a few years. Ironically, its rarity later drove up resale prices.
Now, the X-E5 has two key goals:
- Win back Fujifilm enthusiasts.
- Reclaim the X-E series’ place in the brand’s mirrorless lineup.
Achieving the first goal may not be difficult. Based on user feedback, Fujifilm could regain trust by bringing back physical controls like the rear dial and a built-in grip. Other popular requests include:
- A high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF)
- A larger battery
- A 40MP APS-C sensor
- In-body image stabilization (IBIS)
These features would signal a return to the X-E series’ enthusiast roots. While it’s unlikely the X-E5 will include everything on that wishlist, Fujifilm may position it as a true photographer’s camera—especially now that the X-S20 and X-M5 cater more to video creators.
If Fujifilm can deliver substance without losing the X-E line’s analog charm, the X-E5 could become one of the year’s sleeper hits. The final challenge? Making enough units to meet demand.
