Google Announces Discontinuation of Standalone Pay App in US, Focuses on Google Wallet

Google Pay was replaced by Google Wallet in 2022, but it’s still active in some countries, including the US. Now, Google announced the standalone Pay app will be discontinued in the US on June 4, 2024, to simplify its payment methods. Afterward, it’ll only be accessible in Singapore and India due to specific needs in those countries, as stated in a blog post.

As part of this change, Google will remove peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, balance management, and “find offers and deals” features. Instead, users are advised to use the new deals section on Search. Even after June 4, 2024, users can transfer their Google Pay (GPay) balance to a bank account using the Google Pay website.

Google Wallet has largely replaced GPay, boasting five times more users across 180 countries. It goes beyond payments, storing transport passes, IDs, driver’s licenses, virtual keys, and more. Google Pay will still be available through Google Wallet.

Google Announces Discontinuation of Standalone Pay App in US, Focuses on Google Wallet

Google’s payment system has evolved over the years. It began as Google Wallet in 2011, preceding Apple Pay by years and supported by Mastercard and retailers like Macy’s. Android Pay emerged in 2015, integrated with Google Wallet in 2018, and rebranded as Google Pay. The Google Wallet card, discontinued in 2016, acted as a prepaid debit card accepted wherever Mastercard was.

Correction: Only the standalone Google Pay app is shutting down in the US, not the service itself, which will continue through Google Wallet.
