iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera Upgrades Revealed

Apple has been advancing the camera specs of its phones lately. With the iPhone 16 Pro Max, we might see another significant upgrade. Two of the phone’s sensors are reportedly getting enhancements.

According to the leaker OvO Baby Sauce OvO on Weibo (via MacRumors), the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a new Sony IMX903 sensor, replacing the IMX803 used in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Although still 48MP, this sensor should offer better photo quality.

The ultra-wide camera could see a substantial improvement, increasing to 48MP from the current 12MP.

Unfortunately, the 12MP 5x optical zoom won’t get any upgrades, but improvements to two out of three rear cameras is still impressive.

Upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro

The same source indicates that the iPhone 16 Pro will also have a 48MP ultra-wide camera. Its telephoto lens will be upgraded to match the 5x zoom found on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, the main camera will not be upgraded. This means two out of three sensors will be improved.

While we should approach this leak cautiously, it’s not the first time we’ve heard about both iPhone 16 Pro models getting a 48MP ultra-wide camera. Previous mentions have also suggested an improved main sensor for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Thus, this information could be accurate.

The only conflicting detail is the mention of a new ‘super telephoto’ camera for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, most leaks referring to this are older and likely pertain to the rumored iPhone Ultra, which probably won’t be released this year. So, the leaks mentioned above seem more probable.

Expected Announcement

We should find out the exact camera specs for the iPhone 16 line in September. That’s when these phones, along with the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, are expected to launch.
