Nvidia’s RTX 4000-Series: Enhanced Performance & Mid-Range Refresh Rumors

Nvidia has progressively introduced its Super upgrades of the RTX 4000-series of graphics cards, improved versions with significantly boosted performance. And, according to a recent rumor, the mid-range models might also undergo their refresh.

An alleged leak has emerged concerning plans for updated versions of RTX 4060, 4060 Ti, and 4070 graphics cards, which were revealed by Twitter/X user Zed__Wang and reported on by PCGamesN. Thanks to the table, we are provided with information about the three new dies for the cards as well as the release time frames: March 2024 for the RTX 4070 and April 2024 for the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti.

While details for these newer versions are limited, one could generally assume that a larger die corresponds to superior memory bandwidth, VRAM capacity, and performance. However, according to the same source, this is not the case.

When asked about the specification difference between the original and the updated GPUs, they responded, “Only change the chip; the spec remains the same.” It seems that, at most, we might observe a few additional CUDA, RT, and Tensor cores, but that’s all.

These mid-level updates might not yield significant improvements.

If this leak is reliable, then this update seems to lack substantial changes. If the broader specifications aren’t even being improved, then what’s the point of their release in the first place? The only logical scenario would be if the new cards were more cost-effective than the standard versions.

One positive aspect of the Super series that has previously been introduced is that it has already been lowering the prices of AMD’s RDNA 3 graphics cards, as evidenced by the decreasing prices of the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and the RX 7900 XT once the RTX 4080 Super, 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4070 Super hit the market. Consequently, if these newer mid-range cards are launched, it could result in a reduction in prices for the corresponding AMD cards.

If the rumors are true, it’s quite disheartening that these are the only benefits of acquiring RTX 4060, 4060 Ti, and 4070 refreshes. Let’s hope that if Nvidia does decide to release them, they will prove to be worthwhile investments.
