Hideo Kojima revealed it Death Stranding Isolations (working title), an original animated series based on its franchise coming to Disney+ in 2027. The gaming legend announced this at a Disney+ event in Hong Kong alongside director Sano Takayuki. This will be Kojima Productions’ first collaboration with a global streaming platform, with Kojima as executive producer.
The series tells a new story set in the Death Stranding universe and not based on the stories from the games. All we know so far is that it will “follow a young man and woman on an adventure” and will use traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation. The concept art presented at the event was created by Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Character designer, Ilya Kuvshinov.
stranded in death (the game) was originally released in 2019 starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen and Léa Seydou. The franchise finally got a sequel earlier this year. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
In 2023, Kojima announced that production company A24 was collaborating with Kojima Productions on a live-action film project Death Stranding. He said at the time, “My goal is to present a new dimension of film adaptation that goes beyond simply turning a game into a live-action movie.” This film is directed by Michael Sarnoski (A quiet place: first day).
Live-action series and movies based on games seem to be everywhere these days, but the number of animated productions is also increasing. Many of them are on Netflix, including Splinter Cell: Death Watch, Esoteric, castlevania AND Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Death Stranding Isolations (working title) appears to be the first IP-based animated game series for Disney+.
