ChatGPT Reaches 500 Million Users as OpenAI Highlights Productivity Gains and Economic Impact

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT now serves over 500 million users worldwide, supporting more than 2.5 billion messages daily. The company’s latest research highlights how generative AI is transforming productivity across industries—while also acknowledging the potential for disruption.

ChatGPT Adoption Surges Among U.S. Workers

In 2025, 28% of U.S. adults reported using ChatGPT for work, a sharp rise from just 8% in 2023. This surge reflects growing awareness of the tool’s ability to boost efficiency and streamline tasks.

Popular professional use cases include:

  • Learning and upskilling (20%)
  • Writing and communication (18%)
  • Programming, data science, and mathematics (7%)
  • Creative ideation, business analytics, and translation

These figures suggest that ChatGPT is becoming a staple in the modern workplace.

Who’s Using ChatGPT the Most?

Contrary to expectations, the youngest workers aren’t the most active users. OpenAI’s data shows that 32% of users are aged 25–34, compared to 24% in the 18–24 age group. This trend suggests that generative AI may be more valuable in mid-level roles, where responsibilities are broader and time savings more impactful.

Professionals in law, customer service, consulting, education, and government have reported significant time savings thanks to AI tools like ChatGPT.

AI’s Role in Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth

OpenAI’s report, Unlocking Economic Opportunity, emphasizes how AI is lowering barriers for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The 2025 Y Combinator cohort, for example, is growing at a rate of 10% per week—driven largely by AI-first startups.

By automating complex tasks and reducing startup costs, AI is enabling more people to launch and scale businesses than ever before.

Productivity vs. Disruption: A Balanced View

While OpenAI champions the productivity benefits of AI, it also acknowledges the risks. The company stresses the importance of guiding this technological shift responsibly.

OpenAI’s mission is to democratize access to AI, support workers, and build inclusive systems that benefit everyone. Rather than halting progress, the company aims to shape it in a way that promotes widespread opportunity.

“We’re off to a strong start, creating freely available intelligence being used by more than 500 million people around the world, including 3 million developers,” OpenAI stated.

“We look forward to working with policymakers, workers, educators, and the public to better understand how AI is changing the economy—and to ensure that the economic gains AI brings result in widespread growth and expanded opportunity.”
