Red Dead Redemption 3 Confirmed? The man behind the tale breaks his silence

  • Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser believes the studio will one day develop Red Dead Redemption 3.
  • The screenwriter of Red Dead Redemption 2 believes that the first two works form a “two-part storyline” and that their absence in a possible sequel would make him sad.
  • He adds: “It would probably be sadder to hear from someone who works there. But it’s bound to happen sooner or later.”

Rockstar co-founder and Red Dead Redemption 2 author Dan Houser is convinced that a third part will see the light of day. However, he admits that he would be sad if he was not involved in the development.

Recent guest on the podcast Lex FriedmanHouser, who also scripted almost every episode of Grand Theft Auto, shared his feelings about his absence from the highly anticipated GTA 6, as well as a possible sequel to Red Dead Redemption, following his departure from Rockstar.

The developer admits that it would be a bittersweet moment, but assures that he likes the projects being done at his studio, Absurd Ventures.

“Obviously, turning the page on something that you’ve worked on in one form or another for 20 years, that you’ve written the last ten or eleven chapters, that you’ve written in its entirety, or that you’ve directed as head writer… it’s a big change. And in a way, it’s sad.”

Houser discusses Red Dead Redemption in more detail, mentioning that his work on the first two games forms a “cohesive two-part storyline” and that he would be unhappy not to contribute to the sequel in a possible third work.

Regardless, Dan Houser believes Rockstar will develop Red Dead Redemption 3 sooner rather than later.

“Because each Grand Theft Auto game tells its own story, it’s not exactly the same. It would probably be more boring if someone continued with Red Dead because it was a two-game storyline. It would probably be harder to listen to. But then again, it probably will happen at some point.”

“The license is not mine. It was part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on projects like this, but that doesn’t mean you own it.”

Rockstar has yet to announce plans for a third Red Dead Redemption installment. The studio is currently focusing on Grand Theft Auto 6, which will be released on May 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
