Sony set to leak details about WH-1000XM6 headphones ahead of 2025 release

Sony is set to leak details about its new flagship headphones, the WH-1000XM6. Early this week, images for these models leaked on Sony’s German and UK websites, revealing color options like black, midnight blue, and platinum silver.

The headphones are expected to be launched around May 15, with shipping set for Friday, May 16. Pricing for Europe is €449.99, while the UK will see it at £399.98—a slight increase from the previous model’s price of $399.

The WH-1000XM6 will be foldable to make transportation easier, adding this feature back after its omission in the older WH-1000XM5.

Promotional leaks suggest improved Bluetooth support and audio quality. These updates come as Sony is bringing out a new pair of flagship headphones after the 2022 WH-1000XM5, with fans holding high expectations for this new model.

By the way, you can use this golden opportunity to buy the WH-1000XM5 at a $165 (47%) discount from Adorama here.

Sony has reportedly planned to release its top-tier earbuds, the WH-1000XM6, around mid-2025. Initial rumors suggest this model could launch either in June or July 2024, aligning with updates to Sony’s older flagships like the WF-1000XM5.

However, there’s some uncertainty about the exact launch timeline. The WH-1000XM6 hasn’t been leaked yet, but its sibling products have seen delays. Additionally, FCC filings indicate that similar models might not be available until later in 2024 or early 2025.

Sony has a history of updating its best-selling headphones around summer, signaling this could be another refresh event for its premium audio lineup.

Sony’s WH-1000XM6: What We’d Like to See

Sony has advanced noise cancellation technology significantly, but still lags behind Bose. The latest Bose noise-cancelling headphones outperform Sony, so we’re hopeful Sony can reclaim the crown with updates.

Battery life is another area where Sony needs improvement. While Sony’s headphones consistently offer 30 hours of playtime, competitors like the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless and Cambridge Audio P100 already provide up to 60 hours. We’ll be disappointed if Sony doesn’t match this performance.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones

Water resistance has become more standard among rivals, but Sony could benefit from official IP ratings for better water resistance.

The XM5’s foldable design improved portability, which is great news—though additional padding in the headband would enhance comfort during long listening sessions.

Sony should expand Dolby Atmos support beyond its current range of devices, including more high-end entertainment platforms. Dolby’s proprietary 360 Reality Audio, already available on Sonos and LG Headphones, deserves wider adoption.

USB-C audio is another area for Sony to shine by offering Hi-Fi audio streaming from popular devices like phones and laptops.
