But what sets the Waterfield bag apart from the competition is that the bag doesn’t rely on a zipper, but instead has a series of magnets that hold everything together. And honestly, it’s really nice to not have any sharp objects on or near the case so you don’t have to worry about your Switch 2 getting stolen. This case system also makes it easy to insert a cable, so you can charge Nintendo’s latest handheld without leaving the safety of the case. From a practical standpoint, I also found that I find it much easier to replace the console when I’m done playing, as it’s very quick and easy to insert and remove the console.

The obvious downside is that things like sand can get in more easily, and if you’re storing small accessories like a microSD Express card, there’s no real guarantee that it won’t fall out in transit. Also, the downside to the case’s sleek leather exterior is that it doesn’t have the hard panels that many competitors use, making it not the sturdiest travel companion. If you press the outside of the case, you can feel things like the console’s buttons and joysticks, so you definitely don’t want to put it in a bag that’s already full.
Inside, the Waterfield case is lined with soft microfiber material, keeping the Switch 2 nice and comfortable. There are also two pockets for storing small items such as charging cables, game cartridges or Joy-Con straps. But I mean small, because anything bigger will cause the case to bulge, which can put pressure on the bracket.
Optional accessories
In this case, some extra features are included. But like many luxury products (just look at the options list on a Porsche or Ferrari) you can buy additional accessories such as cable ties, AirTag holders, etc. Best of all, Waterfield playing card holders come in different sizes (4, 10 and 20). So I bought a 10 seat box and it really is the perfect addition to the box. The cartridges fit perfectly and the holder itself fits perfectly in the bag’s built-in pockets. I just wish one was included because you have to pay an extra $10-$30 on top of the already expensive travel insurance.
Summary
Starting at $90 for the nylon or waxed canvas models or $120 for the leather version, Waterfield’s Magnetic Case for Switch 2 certainly doesn’t come cheap. It’s more expensive than Belkin’s charging case, which comes with its own battery. And this without taking into account the owner of a playing card.
But the soft leather and ultra-soft interior may be the most comfortable cocoon Nintendo’s portable console will ever feel. Then add a magnetic closure system and you get the sense that Waterfield have succeeded in turning a product that would normally be an afterthought into something that is a pleasure to use in its own right. For those looking for a travel bag that looks as good as the console it protects (if not better), this bag is in a class of its own.
