Latest Apple Leaks Debunk Surprising iPhone 15 Upgrades

Recent iPhone 15 leaks have been consistent, with leakers agreeing on the major new features. However, a surprising rumor circulated yesterday about significant battery upgrades for all iPhone 15 models, receiving widespread coverage from major tech websites. Unfortunately, I have to debunk this claim.

According to an alleged Foxconn worker interviewed by ITHome, Apple is supposedly planning to include batteries in the next-generation iPhones that are up to 18% larger than those in the iPhone 14 series. Here are the reported capacities:

  • iPhone 15: 3,877mAh (compared to iPhone 14: 3,279mAh)
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 4,912mAh (compared to iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325mAh)
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 3,650mAh (compared to iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200mAh)
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4,852mAh (compared to iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323mAh)

Considering that iPhone battery capacities have remained relatively consistent over the years, this news would have been truly surprising. However, I can confirm that multiple sources have informed me that it simply isn’t true. While the exact capacities have not yet been leaked, it is believed that they will be similar to the iPhone 14 lineup. Apple seems satisfied with the battery life they currently offer, and any further improvements are more likely to come from hardware and software efficiencies.

This decision makes sense from both financial and technological standpoints. Financially, Apple avoids the cost of larger or more dense batteries. Additionally, it is anticipated that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will adopt a more efficient A17 chip fabricated at 3nm. This upgrade will provide increased power while consuming less energy.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will transition to the 5nm A16 chip, which was utilized in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models last year. Although it may not be as efficient as the A17 chip, the A16 chip is a proven performer and offers exceptional battery life in those particular models.

Update: As of 07/06, shortly after this article was published, ITHome has revised its report and refuted the battery information, labeling it as a “casual statement.” It appears that the reported numbers did not align with the actual details. This serves as a valuable reminder that while there are many leaks regarding iPhones, only a few sources can be consistently trusted for credible information.

So what upgrades will we get? In terms of consensus, the most likely upgrades are the transition from Lightning to USB-C wired charging (for all models). The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will adopt the iPhone 14 Pro Dynamic Island design, as well as their A16 chip and 48-megapixel primary rear camera.

Regarding the iPhone 15 Pro models, they will have super slim bezels, which are rumored to be record-breaking. These models will also feature upgraded UWB and utilize a super strong titanium chassis, which may also be remarkably light. Additionally, Apple’s first periscopic optical zoom lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Yes, these are relatively modest upgrades, and one insider recommends undecided upgraders skip this generation, especially with strong rumors of a price hike for iPhone 15 Pro models. However, it is worth noting that iPhone 16 Pro models have already been tipped to receive larger displays in 2024. Therefore, it is advisable to consider your preferred phone size when making your decision.
