Meta’s Tech Spree: AI-Enabled Headphones on the Horizon?

Share

Meta is on a tech spree, from VR headsets like the Quest 3 to smart glasses like Ray-Ban’s. Now, rumors suggest AI-enabled headphones are next. Intriguing, isn’t it?

The Information hints at a project called “Camerabuds”. It’s an audio-camera combo, possibly in headphone or earbud form. Meta is exploring both.

The project is shrouded in mystery, but it seems plausible. The Ray-Ban glasses feature a unique Look and Ask function. You ask a question, take a photo, and provide an answer. It’s not perfect, but it’s interesting. It’s logical for Meta to expand this to other devices.

Headphones or earbuds make sense. They’re wearable even with prescription glasses, unlike smart glasses which require costly prescription lenses.

However, the Meta headphones aren’t without potential issues. The report suggests Meta is aware of some.

Long hair could block the Camerbud’s cameras, reducing their effectiveness. Battery life and heat are also concerns with such feature-packed devices.

Then there’s audio quality. The Quest 3’s audio is decent, but the Ray-Ban glasses’ speakers are lackluster. They’re fine for calls, but not for music.

Meta could improve these issues with dedicated audio hardware. But wouldn’t it be better to enhance existing products rather than create new ones?

Especially when Meta’s Reality Labs, likely behind the Camerabuds, isn’t performing well financially.

As always, take leaks with a grain of salt. I’m skeptical about the Camerabuds, but if they do appear, I’ll be ready to test them.
