Shortly after introducing new colorful speakers and lights, IKEA has further expanded its range of smart home devices with the Gömpyssling lamp and sensor: an LED light that turns on automatically when motion is detected.
It couldn’t be easier or much cheaper. Other Check the notebookYou can now buy a double pack for £3 in the UK and €4 in several EU countries including France and Germany.
It is not yet known if these Christmas lights will reach other countries. In fact, IKEA hasn’t said much about it: the Swedish furniture maker seems to have launched this new unit without much fanfare (or official press release).
we have this official product listwhich gives us more detail about the light. It offers warm white lighting (2700 Kelvin), is made of 50% recycled plastic and has a diameter of 7 cm (2.8 inches) and a depth of 19 mm (0.7 inches).
No hub or app required
The motion-activated light illuminates for 10 seconds after the last motion is detected and comes with a gel pad to stick it to surfaces. What is not included are the batteries which are available separately; Each lamp requires only one AA battery.
This is a product clearly designed to integrate into furniture and cabinets: as IKEA explains, “the light is directed downwards at an angle to illuminate the inside of the furniture,” so there’s no need to wander around in the dark.
While it’s questionable whether Gömpyssling’s bulb and sensor qualifies as a smart home product due to its simplicity, devices that don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi or controlled via a phone app have a certain appeal.
Certainly IKEA seems to have renewed interest in this type of unit. Just before the speakers and lights mentioned at the beginning, the company also launched a series of affordable lights and sensors that you can use to decorate your home.
