Meta is said to have delayed the launch of its upcoming “completely revamped” smart mixed reality glasses.

Meta Orion Hands On

  • The next Smart Meta specification has been postponed
  • The glasses will have improved mixed reality technology
  • Meta needs “more breathing room” to finish it

It looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for Meta’s mixed reality (MR) smart glasses to hit the market: the latest rumors about the device suggest that the launch has been pushed back from next year to 2027.

This is evident from some internal notes from Meta executives, apparently seen by Business interior design (Above devote). The glasses, called ‘Phoenix’, are said to have been delayed, so the company has ‘more leeway to get the details right’.

Another part of the memo says the final product will benefit from this: “We still have a lot ahead of us, with tight deadlines and major changes to our core usage,” it says, “and we will not compromise on delivering a fully polished and reliable experience.” »

We don’t know much about these MR glasses, but sources like The Information say they will be glasses-like and come with a separate accessory for the battery (and perhaps some of the processing power).

There is much more material to come

Obviously, Meta is now an experienced manufacturer of augmented reality and virtual reality devices. Meta Quest 4 is said to be on the market, although there are rumors that it won’t see the light of day until 2026 at the earliest.

The company also has smart specs of its own, most recently in the form of the Ray-Ban Display Meta glasses (with separate neural band control for the wrist) and the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 (without a display).

It looks like the ongoing “Phoenix” update could sit somewhere between the smart glasses we’ve already seen and the larger Quest headsets, likely based on the Meta Orion glasses we’ve already seen in prototype form.

While we know from previous leaks that many wearable AI devices of various kinds are on the way, including a wearable called the “Malibu 2” according to the Business Insider article, we’ll apparently have to wait a little longer for one of them.
