Enhancing Xbox Cloud Gaming App for Quest 3: Recommendations

Share

Following the unexpected Xbox Cloud Gaming debut on Meta Quest 3 last Thursday, I’ve dedicated a considerable portion of my evenings exploring the service. Despite lacking the technical prowess of my conventional 4K TV and console setup, its unmatched portability compensates for any shortcomings.

Essentially functioning as the Netflix equivalent for video games, Xbox Cloud Gaming offers a vast content library for a monthly fee of $16.99 / £12.99 / AU$18.95. This service allows seamless streaming to various devices, including phones, PCs, Xbox consoles, and now, Meta Quest 3, Quest 2, and Quest Pro. The key benefit lies in eliminating the need for robust hardware, as the latest games are executed on remote high-end machines, utilizing your device solely as a screen and controller relay.

In traditional gameplay, your experience is confined to the dimensions of your TV, phone, or computer screen. However, in virtual reality (VR), the immersive joy of playing on an expansive virtual display becomes apparent – especially when employing the Quest 3’s mixed-reality mode. The Large and Extra-large screen options surpass the scale of any TV I’ve encountered, even those showcased at extravagant tech trade shows. It genuinely creates the sensation of gaming within a personal, oversized movie theater.

AspectEvaluation
Graphics QualitySome room for improvement.
Resolution and Frame RateAdvertised 1080p at 60fps, but my experience differs.
Factors Affecting QualityQuest 3 display, internet speed, and screen size.
ObservationsVirtual screen amplifies visual imperfections.

The trade-off emerges in graphics quality, leaving room for improvement. While Xbox Cloud Gaming claims to stream 1080p at 60fps, my experience suggests a lower quality. This discrepancy likely stems from a blend of Quest 3’s display specifications, my internet speed limiting the app, and the oversized virtual screen magnifying visual flaws rather than concealing them.

Head in the Cloud: Exploring the Dynamics of Cloud Gaming in VR

Cloud Gaming in VRImmerse anywhere with robust internet; I lost track of time playing Starfield.
Portability BenefitsBed, commute, coffee shop—cloud gaming’s flexibility beats streaming to a small phone.
VR Headset EvolutionQuest 3 combines VR and AR elements, bridging the gap with AR glasses’ screen projection.
Quest Hardware AdvantageBeyond a wearable projector, it’s a spatial computer offering versatility and value.
Cost ConsiderationsQuest 3’s apparent cost is offset by add-ons needed for AR glasses, making it competitive.
Wired Connections AppealWhile wireless is advantageous, longing for wired connections to broaden device compatibility.
Future Quest PlatformHopeful for expanded compatibility, eager to integrate with devices like Steam Deck and more.

Laying in bed with my Quest 3, the virtual display in mixed reality kept me absorbed in Starfield until the early hours. This portability, enabled by a robust internet connection, revolutionizes VR gaming—play anywhere, anytime.

While streaming Xbox titles to a phone is an option, the limited display hinders the immersive experience. VR headsets, borrowing from AR glasses like Xreal Air 2 or Rokid Max, provide a more captivating virtual screen.

The Quest 3, priced slightly higher on paper, proves its worth as a spatial computer, offering more than just projection. The cost difference becomes negligible when factoring in add-ons necessary for AR glasses, making the Quest 3 a cost-effective choice.

Despite the allure of wireless setups, the experience with Xbox Cloud Gaming fuels the desire for Meta’s VR hardware to support wired connections. This opens the door for immersive interactions with devices like Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 without needing pricey AR specs. We are anticipating future enhancements on the Quest platform for expanded compatibility.

Revolutionizing Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest 3: Essential Updates

App EnhancementsRecommendations
Screen PositioningIntroduce an intuitive method for screen adjustment.
Quest Handsets as ControllerDevelop an emulator for Quest handsets as Xbox controllers.
Connection StabilityInclude in-app metrics for connection stability, resolution, and framerate.
User ExperienceDespite shortcomings, Xbox Cloud Gaming app is a must-try for Game Pass subscribers.

Before Meta tackles broader capabilities, urging updates to the Xbox Cloud Gaming app is crucial. Despite being unveiled at Meta Connect 2022 over a year ago, the app’s simplicity surprises me.

Firstly, an easy screen positioning feature is needed. The current workaround involves using the Oculus button and is effective but not intuitive.

Secondly, an emulator for Quest handsets to function as Xbox controllers, even for select titles, would be valuable.

Lastly, an in-app display of connection stability, resolution, and framerate, with an option to optimize for graphics or performance, would enhance user control.

Despite its flaws, the Xbox Cloud Gaming app is a must-try, especially for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. While my TV will still see much gaming, I envision this VR app becoming a staple in my 2024 gaming routine. It might even prompt me to carry my Quest 3 everywhere for on-the-go gaming.
