OWC has unveiled the Guardian, a compact portable SSD that combines high-speed performance with robust hardware encryption, without compromising ease of use.
The Guardian connects via USB 3.2 Gen 2 and delivers real-world read and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s. That’s fast enough for demanding tasks like 4K video editing, media archiving, and quick backups.

Hardware-Level Encryption Without the Hassle
Security is a key feature. The Guardian uses 256-bit AES OPAL hardware encryption, which activates automatically when data is written. Decryption occurs only when accessed by an authorized user.
Because encryption is handled at the hardware level, it doesn’t slow down your system, even during large file transfers.
Touchscreen Interface Adds Extra Protection
A built-in touchscreen serves as the main interface for user authentication. Users can unlock the drive using a PIN or passphrase, and access advanced features like:
- Multi-user profiles
- Read-only mode
- Auto-timeout
- Secure erase
- Randomized keypad layout to prevent password theft from shoulder surfers
Cross-Platform Compatibility
The Guardian works with macOS, Windows, Linux, and iPadOS. It ships formatted in APFS for Apple devices but can be reformatted using OWC’s Drive Guide utility. For full cross-platform read/write access, third-party software like MacDrive may be required.
Built for Durability—But Not for the Elements
The drive is enclosed in anodized aluminum, which helps with heat dissipation and general durability. However, it lacks an IP rating for dust or water resistance. That may limit its use in rugged or outdoor environments.
Storage Options and Pricing
The Guardian includes a 1TB OWC Aura Pro IV NVMe SSD (960GB usable). It’s also available in larger capacities:
- 1TB – $219.99
- 2TB – $329.99
- 4TB – $529.99
A portion of the internal storage is reserved for data correction and redundancy.
Designed for Professionals
“We designed the OWC Guardian for anyone who needs simple, reliable data protection on the go, but without the typical hassles,” said Larry O’Connor, CEO and Founder of OWC.
“Whether you’re transferring a huge file in the boardroom, backing up data at the local coffee shop, or editing a 4K video for your latest content drop, you shouldn’t have to choose between security, speed, and ease of use. The OWC Guardian delivers all three, in a rugged, intuitive design built to travel.”
