Scientists at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have developed a way to embed transparent solar cells into everyday glass. These cells can power smartphones, cars, and even buildings. This innovation could change how we think about energy.

Led by Professor Kwanyong Seo, the research team created a solar cell with a special “all-back-contact” design. This means all the important parts are hidden behind the glass, leaving the front clear and colorless. As a result, the solar cells can be integrated seamlessly into windows or screens without blocking the view.

High Efficiency and Practical Application

The team’s 16 cm² transparent solar module achieved efficiency levels ranging from 14.7% to 20%. It was able to charge a smartphone using only sunlight. This breakthrough suggests that future devices could charge directly through their screens, reducing our reliance on external chargers.

Professor Seo explains, “This study solves the aesthetic challenges of traditional solar cells, making transparent solar technology more versatile for both small devices and larger surfaces, like windows.”
